Incidentally, neither 56 nor 57 look like recommended builds, 59 seems like the latest recommended. That said, I wouldn't know what Minecraft versions they go with, anyway.

Do you know if it is possible to update forge without having to force update minecraft (I don't want to update to 1.3.4)?

It's not, but MCNostalgia will let you drop back to 1.2.3 (or 1.1, or any other of many known versions) after the update.
