I would recommend you to Vendan's addon in the pending addon section for an eu meter. Although I don't believe its updated to 1.8 yet, its worth taking a look.

What I am suggesting are 3 concepts as folows:
EU Detector
Should be a wire or block that gives off redstone current when EU is flowing through it.
Nulcear Reactor Sensor
Trigger a redstone current if reactor reaches critical temps.
EU Meter
A block which measures the total amount of EU that has flown through it, but resettable to 0 somehow.
These are the few things I have come across that would make a huge difference to me in my construction of the most realistic type of nuclear reactor I can make in MC (I will possibly do another thread with pics and such)
