Yes, but I removed it and the problem persisted. The first time I loaded the volcano chunk it displayed properly, but when I came back later to mine it, the bug was there and no amount of reloading or relaunching would fix it (until I switched to 1.21).

There seems to be a bug with 1.22test14, which causes ProjectRed's Volcanoes and Tinker's Smeltery blocks to become invisible above height 64 (weird). I do not have this bug with 1.21.

I could be wrong, but I think that (at least in my case), FpsPlus's fastmath gives better performance than Optifine's. With all 3 of them (along with the other 100 or so mods) I went from around 27 FPS to 60-100+ (depending on what I'm looking at).
In any case, thanks for making me realise that it's not FastCraft but FpsPlus that was the cause.
