    *bump*
Because I see no reason not to bump something I'd otherwise just re-post.
    Only two replies? *sigh*
edit (avoiding bumping while replying to the below): Yes I realize that now that I think about it. Anyone else's post is just as important as mine no matter how important I may THINK mine is. Bumping implies that I somehow think my post is better despite logic which says otherwise. I feel my post is better, but this differs from it actually being better.

    Do I have it right?

I'm glad you liked it and I agree that the idea should be nerfed. I think it needs to act like something that accepts power (which is where the storage idea came from) so that it doesn't get ignored if you put it at the end of the line or, in my case, in line with something that isn't sending power, but maybe it could just be like a void pipe for energy, or better yet, give it a configurable option much like the redstone behavior button to switch between wire and void. I think it should also have a way to trigger it to start and stop counting using redstone, and maybe send a redstone pulse for any ticks for which the packet size exceeds X EU/p, and again, this would be a setting on the GUI. Looks like anyone planning to implement this is going to have some fun (well... its fun for us)

    Name:
    EU packet logger
Description (sorry, but I don't do short "describtions"):
First, some background on the source of this suggestion:
I recently had some trouble with a geothermal generator not working for me and i could not figure out why. I tried using an EU reader, but it didn't help. It only shows the average between two points in time for the same block. Not bad if your just trying to figure out how much your slightly conservative CASUC reactor is producing but when your trying to troubleshoot, it's not much help. Take my geo-gen issue, which is resolved fortunately, for instance (I didn't know my geo-gen was too far away. I just knew it was shutting down like it wasn't connected). See the bug-shooting HERE.
    Now the actual description:
I was thinking of a block that would log the first 20 (or configurable) individual EU packets that come to it in a tick and store a few seconds (definition of a few is also configurable) of this log in the tile entity data or something. It should be possible to force EU to come through it by making it the only route and causing it to act like a very small storage block.

Any moderator input (like if my post has some sort of rule-breaking or other problem I somehow missed on preview), support, questions, comments, suggestion-enhancing-suggestions, hate posts (if you're looking to get reported), other?

yeah i understand. i dont know when it started so i cant really reproduce it. i just know it was working one time, i changed stuff with my wiring, and it stopped working.

it looks like its stopping cause it thinks it has nowhere to send the power. im gonna try putting it right next to my storage unit and see if that fixes the issue... if it doesnt, ill just use steam engines combined with pnumatic generators (which convert BC energy to IC² energy (don't know how to get the "²"? turn num lock on, hold alt, and hit 2>5>3 on the number pad XD)). the pros of that are: it works, and i can teleport my energy through the aditional pipes addon. Cons: more steam engines, more space consumption, and the geo-gen (what i like to call geothermal generators) becomes a pointless inventory hog... I might just spawn in the ingredients and throw it out if i cant find a use for it.

EDIT #2: (which i almost COMPLETELY forgot to add... and then forgot to post for a few days... too many tabs im jumping between i guess): i tried putting my geo-gen next to one of the storage units (the MFSU, which i had moved back slightly...) and suddenly it started working... maybe it was a quirk that the generator did not realize the energy would make it to the MFE and thus it turned off?
what would be really helpful (not necessarily in this case) is a block (like the EU-detector cable... edit #3: or maybe more like a small power storage I'm thinking the max storage should be about 5 seconds at maximum achievable packet size 2048 isn't it? maybe I ought to just start a suggestion thread rather than edit this post again... DONE: Link HERE) that would log the EU packets (EVERY individual packet not just the total) passing through it for the last X-number of ticks (where X is defined in the config file). im not quite sure it would help in this particular case but it's just a thought...

nope. when you mentioned that i thought i might have made such a huge derp but NOPE. MFE is empty and still nothing. im convinced its a coding bug.
it was working and then it stopped working and didnt start again.
its not the MFE being full.
its not the MFE being backwards.
its got lava in its gauge.
it would be producing enough voltage (20 EU packets) to reach the MFE... if it would work.
it turns on but doesn't stay on for more than 1 or 2 ticks.

    i think its a bug
    objections, alternate possibilities?

I considered that but for some reason thought you had a different way to tell. Don't ask why...

Anyone know what I can do about this other than my (preferably temporary) solution of steam engines+pneumatic generator?
    EDIT 1:
NOTE: i actually DO have a tansformer upgrade on my recycler thus it WONT blow up with the MFE output facing it. my MFE is facing the right way. that is not the problem.

to clarify what happens when i give the geothermal fuel: it turns on, then turns off approx. 1 frame later. during that moment, the EU reader DOES detect output energy.

can we drop the sarcasm? i have all my power generation on one side, all of the usage on the left, and its always been like that. it was working. the geothermal is the ONLY exception.

    1. yes. i spawned some in with NEI when i lost lava when i tried to reset it. still doesnt work
    2. not sure 1EU/t... but how is that relevant?
    3. yes. its the side OPPOSITE the brown spot on the MFE.
    4. yes. i checked that before calling it a bug. the horizontal red meter next to that also turns all red. i assume thats like the capacitor in an electric furnace/macerator/etc

    1. If the problem was somehow with buildcraft I don't think that's irrelevant
    2. I assumed that, to the op, fix your cable use, solars can use tin cable
    3. wat
    4. Interesting, op, your thoughts?

    1.
    2. one of the panels is powering the mfe. one is to far, as mentioned. i checked. my MFE is recieving 1 EU/t during the day.
    3. wrong. its an input. otherwise i would have noticed my solar(s) & (coal powered) generator not filling it
    4. how can you tell its filling not full? you're right (i think...) but how can you tell?

    1. I could if I hadn't dismantled my setup and substituted it with a pnumatic generator+steam engine setup... I suppose I could recreate it or use a backup save file (coincidentally I backed up soon after finding this bug)...
I will edit this post once I have screenshots
EDIT: 3 screenshots. one with the generator as the focus, one of the wireing from the top, one of the wiring from the bottom (with some of the stone stripped away since the other 2 screenshots

note: the thing touching the corner of the LV transformer (which is on the left) is the MFE. hopefully the MFSU isnt too hard to recognize. same with the geo (ITS THE THING WITH THE LAVA PIPES GOING INTO IT :D )

    2. Since I don't have screenshots yet and might not be able to get good ones since my setup is kinda irregular...: gold 2Xins cable, 3 units/blocks/meters between the geo and the MFE, 3 or 4 more between the MFE and the MFSU,... so about 5-7 units MAX not counting branches. there were 2-3 T-intersection branches. I realize branches cut power in half but even so id still 3-5 EU per packet by the time it gets to the MFSU.

3.I'm using Technic (not tekkit... so its the ssp version of IC2)

I made a geothermal generator and put it on my power grid. I fueled it with BC fluid pipes and it seemed to be working fine. I changed some stuff with my power grid (specifically, I added a second line (splitting right at the back of the MFE) from the (supplementary) power generation area heading past my solar panels to my MFSU and I broke the old one that went through my MFE, split (other side goes to LV transformer powering my LV stuff), and ran to the MFSU. I didn't like that it drained my MFE to fill the MFSU but still wanted both: the MFE for my macerator, furnace, extractor, compressor, and recycler; the MFSU for my Mass Fab). when i tried to turn the geothermal generator back on (i THOUGHT it had simply run out of lava since i had turned the redstone engine off. the face was dark.), i found that, despite it having lava, it would not generate power. i doublechecked this by making an EU-reader. sure enough, it read 0 over several hundred ticks. i tried breaking (with a wrench of course) the geothermal and replacing it, but it still only generated a few EU on being placed (and given lava) after which it IMMEDIATELY shut off. i used a teleport tether to make sure it wasn't on a chunk boundary (which, initially, it was) but it STILL wont start up. I'm not sure what to do at this point. Ive even tried reloading the world. i want my fricking 20 EU/t LOL.

to review: I gave it lava, gave it somewhere to put the power, made sure its not on a chunk boundary, reloaded my world, it still doesn't stay on.
