I'm using minecraft 1.2.4 and when its finished loading the world I can see my health, exp bar, food meter for only a few seconds and then the entire screen goes black.

first off, welcome to the forums.
second, run minecraft like this:
open command prompt. and copy.paste this line:
java -Xms512m -Xmx1024m -cp "%APPDATA%\.minecraft\bin\*" -Djava.library.path="%APPDATA%\.minecraft\bin\natives" net.minecraft.client.Minecraftit should now run mc, and show you an crash report when it crashes. post that here, and the other technical folk can help you out
