Railcraft would benefit from this as well.

I've found that if you pulse the pistons often enough to keep the reeds from growing more than two blocks high you get very little reed flying outside the collection area. But that depends largely on your design. I have collections pipes every two blocks under the pistons and pipes for collecting reeds that fall in the water.
And I dont think the pistons are causing the lag, because it still lags when I take out the sequencer controlling them. Unless their mere presence lags.
The reeds in the picture are 3 blocks tall because the pistons were disabled when I took the pic.

Well either way, they will bleed power like crazy unless they only ask for power in max sized packets. =/
-
I'd be happy with a modern looking block that isnt smoothstone or the expensive iron blocks. Maybe corrugated tin siding and metal plates.
-
Sounds like you just want to dumb down the entire power infrastructure into a single block that can do everything.
-
Well I went ahead and finished my reed farm anyway since I had nothing else better to do while waiting for the 1.8 version so I can start a new world.
The farm outputs about 3 EU/t on average and lags like hell. There are 6 rows of 45 reeds for a total of 270 blocks (and 270 pistons). It looks pretty cool, like a real farm, something I think would be hard with a cactus farm. But oh god the lag!
Now I need to find a new use for 270 pistons.

I was trying to run a wire down the side of the mountain from my wind generators if it matters.
-
Well if you are using it for grid to grid overflow, you will want it to be EV.
-
but what is the amount of EUt a tin cable can transport before melting please ?
I think its 3 EU packets, but dont quote me. It's more than enough for solar/water and probably wind output. Now remember that doesnt mean its limited to 3 solars per cable either.

Personally, a EV or HV version is probably all that's needed. No one cares about power overflow on low capacity grids.

Yes, I guess I assumed recharging was a given when I made the list. =P
Though I was suggesting a cost for each item inserted/removed, not each use. Though either way would work.

I find the trees are too tall and most of my stuff has a base elevation of about 75. I cant even hop onto the roof of most of my buildings. =/
And forget using it to build on a mountain side. Which was the reason I built it in the first place.

So I thought about the "Dimensional Pocket" a little more.
Here are my thoughts:
- Inserting or removing items cost a set amount of power per item.
- Upon depletion explode at the players position (small) and toss the items everywhere. The pocket is destroyed in the process.
-
Only empty seems to work. And I couldn't even fill the jetpack once made from a fuel can. Has to be filled from fuel cells.
The height limit of the electric jetpack makes it nearly useless for surface use. But the fuel jetpack is a massive pain to refuel, unless you make a fuel factory.
-
If some kind of "subspace pocket" device was created it should lose power over time. When depleted everything in the pocket is lost.
So dont forget to recharge!

minecraft is not rpg, you dont need to kill mobs at all, just build.
Tell that to Notch. Seeing as we now get XP.

I started building one of these, but stopped when I realized how big it would have to be to be useful. There are cheaper ways to make power. Cactus would probably work though. Still needs to be pretty big, but it would be much cheaper since you no longer need the pistons.
Hmm....I could probably build a system of 5 pistons that could harvest 12 reeds though.
EDIT: Ok, reducing the pistons just means I use more Redstone Wire (x3) so in the end I save no iron and its much more complicated.
-
Well if you put a MSFU between the grids powered by redstone, it would only send power into the Mass Fab grid when the MSFU is full.
-
I could, but i actually was going to use the "giant
circlerectangle of high-energy" as the only applyable powering mechanism for T4-Machines, like the Ion Cannon and the AoE-Teleporter...AoE Teleporter...hmm....I assume that's teleporting all players in an area, but it gives me the image of teleporting entire buildings.

Personally, I see far too many slimes. Its at the point where I wish I had more uses for slimeballs.
