WIll IC2 get open sourced at some point?

  • Hello, is there any plans to make IC2 open source? I think it will benefit a lot, we could port it to newer versions, fix bugs, and more stuff with the code being open, but until that we still have to play 1.12

  • I doubt this will ever happen. There are to many licensing issues as the code isn't fully owned by 1 person and the majority of the team is gone.
And the law where the mod is created is extremely strict.

On top of that, open source isn't required to make addons.

    At least with java.
Simply put you can decompile the mod to read the source

And doing that isn't illegal since there aren't protections in place anyways by default.
If a standard decompiler can't decompile the mod the its a different story.

Anyways, i remember a time where mods weren't stopped by "Its not open source that's why i can't write addons".

The main problem is that the mod is not maintained and greg covers the people that want complexity so it its a niche within a niche since it gave up its original style/design.

So if you want to write addons, just decompile the mod or integrate it into your IDE and then just extend it.

  • Closed source is not the core problem of IC² project maintenance slowdown
Of course, also as Speiger said, many of IC²'s old contributors are gone, and the copyright issues are quite complicated.

  • I wonder if this nightly build is stable? I'm still playing on 1.16 and really hope IC2 will soon have better support for new versions.

nope, this still has many problems, and at the time of September 2023, the sfPlayer build site broke for a long time. To continue development work, I moved the project's build process to GitHub. The latest release version is here:
