How exactly do I get my plants to cross-Breed?

That. How do I get my plants to crossbreed? I tried the Crop - Doublecrop - Crop, doesn't work. Or is it just a really slow process?

It can take a while.
Also crossbreeding only happens when the crops you are using are fully grown.
