Imagine a machine that could convert mineral dust and coal dust into leather or even steaks and food. It would require you to have at least one of the items that you wish to grow in the machine and it would take a while to make stuff.

Then you're wrong. I would use it, because I often forget to use breeding, I'm too lazy for that, and because the Coal to Diamonds recipe is way too expensive to be used, especially with TC3 Thaumium Pickaxe with Repair II, Unbreaking III, Efficiency V and FORTUNE III (I never managed to get Efficiency IV and Fortune IV instead, however ^^)

You can't get fortune IV with vanilla enchantments if i'm not wrong.

How about a plant that you feed and it produces meat? makes no sense but it would be pretty funny to feed a carnivorous plant and have meat come flying at you come harvest time.

To post above, there is an addon which adds plants to produce mob items, including food. I don't know if its updated.
