You can always set a fuel value for items using Custom Recipes...
But I agree.. if it's organic, it should be combustible... No, maybe not the most reliable fuel sources, but maybe as a better way to make use of 'trash products' clogging up your inventory space...

You also don't recall how broken it was to allow such feature, as when MV was later introduced, it was virtually useless due to how cables worked then (ya, I remember it actually)...
Plus, there are many work-arounds with other mods that you can use if you are clever enough to discover them. Some examples..
1. Buildcraft + Teleport Pipes + Transformers Add-on = Teleport power anywhere within your chunks. Use it to power your Miners today!
2. Ender storage = Two chests, Two EU storage blocks, several batteries and Crystals... Need power somewhere? Place the Chests where you need them and open away!
3. vanilla Minecraft = Hey, look, mine carts with chests! How about we put rails up (Since they are cheap as piss with bronze) and push carts around full of batteries!
a modern wise man once said "never underestimate the bandwidth of a data-tape laden station wagon speeding down the highway" the same can be said of storage carts full of batteries (or Electrolyzed Water Cells )

(Panes are seriously cheap, and cobble can be macereated into sand, btw)
when you are building your first hut your are more likely to have wood on hand then sand, and a furnace. plus if you spring for a fence gate then you have a window that you can open and punch zombies from. plus the fences are recyclable 
when your ready for glass windows you can pop the fences out and make an animal pen out of them or something
hv cables already do this just in a different way. if your sending 32 LV packets (that's 32 eu per packet) over iron cable then you losing 32 eu every block(1 eu per packet), BUT if you send 1 EV packet(thats 1024 EU per packet) then you only lose 1 eu per block
at that last part.
unfortunately the genre of deep customization is very small. i haves searched for similar games before. that is what brought me to minecraft in the first place but here are some other games that may scratch the customizing itch
1. dwarf fortress (build moria, dig to deep, and lose over and over and over its fun)
2. kerbal space program (customize Apollo era rockets)
3. gearheadrpg (i found v1 very fun it is a rougelike game about giant mecha which you can customize)
4. ANY scifi tabletop roleplaying game(traveller, starwars d&d, serenity rpg, whatever if its in space it will let you pimp out a space ship, don't forget your dice)
5. FTL (when it comes out(if it comes out(its a kickstarter)))
6. privateer Gemini gold? (its a relic from the vegastrike project that remakes wing commander privateer it should have frighter customization)
all i can say is
fences make good windows
PLAY WING COMMANDER SAGA! it isn't a perfect fit for either but it has ships, and it has shooting. plus its a well polished, 50 mission long, free game, with an original score, and full voice acting

THAT won't pose an issue. Even vanilla furnaces can simply store "one value".
IC is already using that one value to supply whole cans of fuel... the number really doesn't care which value you assign to it. There won't be an issue with using one unit of BC-oil to provide X fuel points.Adding the ability to pour multiple cans of fuel in would be possible... But I'm not sure whether it's within the range of what the Generator is intended to do.
How about we put this on the list for a special generator, which is meant to run off fuel, gas (if implemented) and BC oil, using said materials in a higher efficiency then the normal generator (if at all) with a higher EU output, probably about 30 EUt, too compensate for the incapability to burn simple stuff (wood, coal) as well as the fact you're using complex and limited fuel materials.
sounds awesome also i think either diesel generator or gas turbine will be the most appropriate names for this new gen
Thats for BC-IC Interaction, but what about adding the internal fuel storage to the generator? (Not only for BC Fuel, but for IC2 Fuel too)

one of my big hold ups to using fuel-cans in my generators is they don't stack so i can't leave a bunch to run something and walk away like i can charcoal.
so to give fuel cans a little nudge how about we add a fuel buffer to the normal generator. like the geogens lava buffer but for biofuel/coalfuel/superfuel. just to toss a number out there lets say it can hold 2 maxed out superfuel cans worth of fuel

I considered coding "gas"-blocks once, moving on their own (upward), exploding upon contact with fire and being harvestable by properly placing a harvesting device which will suck in gas block from below it, turning them into a possibly fuel source.
you could add a gassifier that turns charcoal into woodgas allowing us to get more eu out of our logs at the cost of an extra step
