Well, that's what RAM is; active program storage for high-speed access. A "RAM Disk" is therefore effectively meaningless.
Higher frequency RAM, SSD in stead of HDD, higher frequency CPU, and overclocking RAM / CPU; those are the 4 ways you could potentially improve load times. Granted, 3 of those 4 require newer hardware, and the 4th is risky, but that's the price of faster loading.
Also, AFAIK FastCraft does attempt to increase initial load speeds. There's only so much optimization mods can do, but having FastCraft goes a long way, particularly with how much heavier 1.7 mod packs are [than 1.6 packs and earlier].
Thanks for posting this. It may help others looking to boost their PC. Having been in the IT field for 20+ years, I know what it takes to boost performance. I was directly talking about old hardware, and how to give it a boost. Knowing now that it isn't I/O bound, helps me to inform others on what steps they can take. This isn't an issue for me, as being in the IT field, I like to treat myself to higher performing PCs =).

Actually I've been working on major load time optimization for quite a while besides what is already in FastCraft. That work however isn't usable yet and gets (mostly) stripped from builds.
The startup isn't really I/O bound, it's a lot more complicated to accelerate than just moving some data to RAM. The baseline is actually better than one would assume, I've profiled the loading and there's not really any low hanging fruit.
Awesome to hear. Keep up the good work.

Just wondering if it is possible to further improve mod loading in Forge with FastCraft? The number one thing I hear of the most is how long it takes to load the game with a bunch of mods, especially on older hardware. A crash is a nightmare on a slow system, it could be quite a few minutes to get back in the game. If not, then ignore this post =).
Edit: Thinking out loud here. Possibly a RAM Disk that Mods get copied in to, invoked, and unloaded after the game starts?

I get this error loading the client with shaders 2.3.24 installed, 2.3.22 works just fine.

Nice, does this mean you're taking the Reigns GregT?
-
I will probably get flamed for this, but is IC2 even necessary any more? Without GregTech to make things interesting, it has been the same mod for over 2 years now. What is the direction of IC2? Other than Beta releases, there has been no official release for 9 months. No new additions, some MIA devs. I see some progress is being made on 1.118, but that is just a port to get it going in 1.6.2.. Maybe it is time to hand over the reigns and get some fresh ideas? Don't get me wrong, IC2 will always have a place in my MC history as one of my favorite mods. It is quickly falling out of favor though with myself as well as many fans, hence the reason for this post. What is IC2 now?
Flame away...

I dont have Problems with them. I have NEI with IC²-Plugin and Redpower together with the most recent Version.
What version of Forge are you using? Are you using all RedPower addons? NEI 1.3.0.1?
-
Remove the ic2 folder from the EE/Forestry jars
This works for those mods. What about NEI, RedPower, and any other Chicken_Bones mods? Thanks!
-
Does not funcion with RedPower 2.0PR5B2. Nor any other Chicken_Bones MODS. Works great if all you want to run is IC2.
-
Appears to not function with EE2 1.4.6.7 which is the latest version for 1.2.5.
-
It seems to not like NEI period. Not the plugin or the MOD.
-
Update all the other mods you have installed. They cause that problem.
All other mods are updated. Also does it if no other mods are installed. 1.97 works perfectly.

STOP TRYING TO NERF QUANTUM!
It is fine and balanced as it is.
Stop whining because you don't have one and people keep killing you.
Use a nuke.
[End rage]LOL, did you even read the suggestion? I have one and once you build it IC2 is pretty boring from that point on since it is the "End Game device". Regardless as I said before it is what it is.
-
i apologize for my defensiveness we have had some pretty aggressive nerfers here the past week or 2 especially on this subject. I do recognize that acidents happen and no one is expected to read 8 pages of old suggestions (a couple clicks of the search button is all any one asks) so I'll let it go. as for quantum food helmet vs. drinking hat if you boil the 2 down they both have the same mechanic of making food useful again they just have different ways of selling it. also I'm of the opinion that considering the q-helmets means of construction energy to food makes sense. and as for "why crops" crops yield more than food, make a good hobby, and are a good alternate way to survive for the "qsuit OP!" crowd.
Apology accepted, Thank you! My faith in people to have common decency is renewed.
-
QuantumSuit Armor is balanced around being the final, end-game thing.
It's fine.
If that is the case, then it is what it is.
Thanks!

not this again I'm pretty sure qsuit nerfs are on the "repeated to often so don't suggest them" blacklist your supposed to be invincible that's the idea this was not a bug or accident and no one is making you build a qsuit
again a repeat suggestion (and repeating a post on the first page to boot) http://forum.industrial-craft.…page=Thread&threadID=5822
NO the hallmark of ic2 is equipment that doesn't break but needs to be charged
number 1 is a very close copy of "novelty drinking hat" that is on the first page of this sub-forum, and the concepts of qsuit nerfs have been debated and rejected 2 twice over the past week. your blatant ignorance for the rules is appalling
I disagree, this is not a repeat of an idea, this is a modification to the quantum helm. The novelty hat is a different idea all together. Plus this does not necessarily "Nerf" a quantum helmet, in my opinion it adds to it. I know what the purpose of the quantum suit is, and you are right it is to be invincible. This idea was to give food a purpose again after building a Quantum Suit. Otherwise it is pointless after having built one. It also makes the crops pointless imho. Why should I build crops when I can just build a quantum suit? That is what I was trying to point out. If you don't like idea listed #2 scrap it all together.
Also I read the rules and excuse me for not reading a suggestion posted "Novelty Drinking Hat", who knew it would have an item suggested for canned food. I certainly don't have the time to read every post when there are 8 pages of them. Let alone pay attention to a subject that was towards "Drinking" and not "Eating". Sorry if I have a life and enjoy playing IC2 occasionally, and make a suggestion that I feel would enhance the game for me. Let alone have the time with said life to troll the forums all day long to make a post. The rudeness on the forum is appalling if you ask me.

As many posts suggest, people feel it is a bit over powered. I tend to agree, as soon as you put it on you are invicible. So a couple of ideas came to mind ~
1. Instead of the helmet providing constant life via EU. Give food a purpose again and allow it to have a built in food storage. The idea is compressible food in containers, that can be injected in to the helmet via the canner, that will slowly keep the players food need met when worn. Kind of like the Fuels in IC2 currently. As for the EU charge it currently needs, this could be used toward the extraction of food to feed the player.
2. Armor degredation. All this power has to have a flaw. Let the armor degrade over time and have the need to be repaired via more iridium. The more degredation, the more iridium needed to fix it.
If anything has been suggested before I am sorry. I did a glance over the posts and had not seen anything like this.
