GregTech 5.04.02? That version is really old. Try updating to 5.08.24.

Got to the title screen but when I tried to open a world just took me back to title screen

Because that's what's doing it. Or at least that's what is throwing the exception trying to add it's recipes.
It's already on the Github with people who have the exact same world loading problem as you with Gregtech: https://github.com/rwtema/DenseOres/issues/75
