Cactus power and free stuff (diamond too)

  • I've seen talk about reed power, largely made popular by the yogcast. But many people have over looked that cactus produces the same energy as reeds, but with cactus you can have a completely automatic farm without complex redstone and because of the fact that if cactus grows to the next block up and these an adjacent block then it breaks of to form a cactus item.

In my farm I use water to move the cactus to a single point and then ( i have buildcraft too) use an odisdian pipe to pick them up, I then feed it in to a generator to produce energy. And because its completely automatic It will run with no babysitting.

But to go one step more, by taking the exsess cactus and putting it in to a recycler you can get scrap, which is then turn into a scrap box ( automatic crafting table for this too). And the scrap boxs turn into lots of items including diamond, I useally put the items I dont want back into the recyler.

Cactus farm will work anywhere and doesn't need light to grow. I've build one in the hole left by a buildcraft quary and with my cactus farm just over half the cactus goes to recyclers.

The recyclers randomly produce a peice of scrap with a 1/8 chance and about 1/25 scrap boxses make daimond, with each scrap box holding 9 scrap. so you'll need about 1800 cactus to make one diamond and my farm makes about 75 cactus a minute but half is use to power the recyclers so 37 cactus goes to the recyclers a minute so it takes about 48 minutes to make a diamond this way. now my farm has about 1400 cactus, but I build that in about two hours not increaing the time to mine the hole, you could make it much bigger if you like. I've got a lot (25) of diamond from my cactus farm and plenty of over stuff (cake!). If all the cactus was used for energy then the energy produce per minute will be 9312 EU.

People of IC stop the reed power and start the cactus power!

  • That's great, however you could make your targeted material, the diamond, out of a trickle of power and 544 scrap fed to a massfab. Though if the 1 in 25 rate for scrapboxes is correct that's would be more efficient at 225 (on average) plus lots of random junk as a bonus.

  • I had a 50 by 50 and about 4-5 floors cactus farm (yes that is freaking huge). I used it to feed like 20 recyclers and a autocrafting table so the scrap got turned to scrap boxes automatically. Now i have redpower i think you can use the scrapboxes with deployers. Then ad a sorting system and voila a fully automatic cactus to diamond and other stuff converter :)

Loop the stuff you dont want back to the recyclers.

Someone tested the chances on scrapboxes, I think it was 2% for most items (including diamonds)... so that would make it ~ 1 in 50 not 1 in 25.

You can have dispensers "use" scrapboxes (to get the item out) [since IC2 1.15 I think]. So just IC2 + BC gets you to automatic scrap-plants :)

It's different because it requires buildcraft to automate. Without buildcraft, you'd have to AFK at the cactus farm for 48 minutes, then shuffle 28 stacks (27 slots in main inv...) into a bank of recyclers for every diamond. A late game power rig will produce diamond faster automatically with mass fabricators.

We should not make IC unbalanced just because BC+IC is unbalanced.

  • So, can anyone remind me why we cant macerate charcoal? How is this much different from growing diamonds via charcoal dust?

Cos you'd only need 1 stack of wood (64 items) to make a diamond? Vs ... ~3600 items through the scrap process?
... Don't complain too much of they might take diamonds off the list of possible scrapbox items :)

  • Unless you got mods recycling requires tons of babysitting while mass fab is pretty easy to handle. Btw it costs 8 items to make 1 scrap and you need 9 scrap for 1 scrapbox so you need 81 item per scrap box. Diamond got 4% chance so that means you need 81*25 = 2015 items to make 1 diamond and if you want to do this at a reasonable speed you would need alot of recyclers.

Good Idea, Diamonds definitely should be taken off of the list, as that would prevent me complaining that the whole scrap box system really needed to be redone, or removed.

  • BTW, the 'stack' of wood thing only reduces to planks (256 recycled items) before it looses recycling value. Sticks have no recycling value (always 0% chance of scrap).

That still doesn't get you 256 scrap though; I think the actual chance is something like 8%; I recall scrapping whole stacks of stone before and getting less than 8 scrap.

  • nah it's round 1/8
did a few tests - one time 3/4 recyclers end up with 8 scrap, other 6, sometimes i got 9,10,10, sometimes as low as 5
on average it's 8 items per stack

Ever notice when forums have a suggestion board, there's a small group of idiots who just hang around that little forum section? Yeah, I'm one of those guys. (c) by That one guy
