Like the title said, Explosion mode its kinda of a hit or miss sometimes when trying to destroy rock, If it hits directly the rock it will only Destroy 1 block only but if it hits Dirt or explode mid air it could or could not Destroy those Stone blocks. Its kinda annoying when you are trying to demolish a mountain.

Mining Drill doesn't have an explosion mode.
As for Mining Laser, it got rewritten to accustum to new hardness values due to Mojang, thus your issue will probably be fixed in the next release.

What is this "explosion" mode you are talking about?
Do you mean the Mining LASER?(ninja'd by the Boss...)

Woops i derped the name, yes indeed its the mining laser
(Although a drill that place a primed dinamite 2 blocks ahead would be a cool idea... but meh im just dreaming)
