Make it cheap UUM wise but very time costly (like an hour or two for a single gem) and be not automatable.
Thus it would only be used for convenient gem production, not in a huge industrial scale.

A week ago I saw a guy post a world with an ocean of UU matter with the tagline "take that gregtech". Why would the guy even install it?
Oceans of UU are useless anyway, since the machines and power needed to use the UU requires lots of Gregtech infrastructure first (steel for generator for example)

I asked because there aren't really any chemical compound cells or fluids in Industrialcraft that make it possible to actually create these recipes. If you have any bright ideas about how to solve this without coding in all the compounds yourself, go on.
It is a dying mod after all, adding wool dying plants not an industrial chemical processing ones. It should have some dye based recipes.
Do you want the machine to be usable if GT is not installed? IC2 has a very limited number of items/fluids and you most likely will only get to add a Diamond one (from 32 Coal Dust or 64 Charcoal dust) if you want the recipes to make sense.
Is that not a pointless addition if it is only available for Gregtech?

1.7 is gonna be a good time to do anything that would encourage starting over anyway, given the amount of new worldgen being added to the base game.
We've still got CF Foam though, it seems unnecessary to replace something that is already fine.

I think you've got the wrong Gregtech.
The prime example of a fun Minecraft mod is (even though I don't like her personally) Eloraams machines. Beside all balance issues: what you get is a set of easy to make tools that everyone understands withing a few minutes of gameplay, but the possibilities are close to unlimited. With like 5 (each on it's own easy to grasp) blocks, people have assembled millions of creations happily for days and month.
She added a furnace, and an alloy furnace. IC2 adds an entire processing line, flight and a sensible way of hiding your cables. The sorting machines were nice, but never really seemed to be fully expanded to what they could be.
And now to loop back to my initial post: you can design the mod in a way that the player is pushed by annoying things and tedious tasks to advance and automate this using the mod's tools, which will result in players being initially frustrated, then happy. Or you can design the mod that it is fun right from the start and then gets even better the further you proceed, causing the player to be happy then even more happy while playing.
The later however is much more difficult but also much more desireable.
For it to be fun at the start would imply that something would be cheap/easily made so they aren't spending time on crafting. That defeats the entire point, as I can't see how something can get more fun and the player get happier, if they were happy to start with.

The only tedious things in IC2 result in getting things to be less tedious.
Have you not considered getting NEI? It makes life alot easier for, well, everything. Pretty sure coils are 8 uninsulated copper wire around an iron ingot.

Best bee is Both 2 temp tolerance and Both 1 humidity with normal-normal, that'll work anywhere with cave dwelling. Extra bees can get OP very quickly, essentially as soon as you get an alvery.

Right now no IC2 machine will explode with too high EU into it and all cables can carry all voltages, but that is only temporary until the E-net is finished/more stable. When it is, machines (including the bat-box) will explode with too much EU input like before.
