What I did in my spare two-to-three hours.
Hey... I remember you! It's not really prohibited to look at the code, but just don't post the code publicly. The reason why they put dev jars up, is so people can test their ic2-addons with ic2 not crashing. Because most mods are in obfuscated form (meaning that they cannot be read correctly), and within an I.D.E., the code is just de-obfuscated. If you try to put the two together, it will crash the game. So that's why they put up a dev jar to make people's life easier.
Mainly what my suggestion said, having un-crossbreadable coffee and hops spawning (in the world) that could still be farmed (AKA not single use) to get earlier game coffee and beer. A better tiered system of brewing, IE, industrial sized vats to mass brew stuff, a way to tell how a brew is doing in a booze barrel etc. And a way to use the vats to mass brew potions with the same ingredients as if you were using a normal brewing stand, just with weaker effects. Will that get you started?
That sounds like a lot of things to do.

1.7 ideally, 1.6 mods are a bygone age. Unless you can't, they I'd guess I'd get over it.
Oh, okay. I might be able to do that, but I have to finish up my core mod first, then port it over to 1.7.

If you don't know how to import a techne model into minecraft, and can't even look it up yourself, I think you should just stop right there and then.
