what reason for solid canning to exists at all?

Probably the same reason we have the bottling plant

Both the solid canner and bottling plant use 2 EU/t while the canning machine uses 4. So if you only want to fill/empty cells, or put uranium into fuel rods, then they are slightly better than the canning machine.

Actually the multi-purpose machine is to be removed in favor of the simpler dedicated ones.
