It isn't required per se, but it takes 8x as much energy without it. Again, it's easier to turn "raw" matter into something else than it is to create it from pure energy, though both are scientifically possible.

Actualy you can turn matter to energy and vice versa in RL.

Well, theoretically at least.
Turning matter into energy is easy - we do it every time we burn something (though the return is poor and there's a lot of waste). Nuclear power is about the most efficient return we've gotten on this, but it still does not yield a 100% return.As for turning energy into matter - it's been done in labs, but the amount of matter is minute, and the energy required is again far more than the return. Scientists have also been able to transform some elements into others, again at a very lossy cost in energy.
But theoretically, yes - matter can be turned into energy and vice versa.
