So I just noticed that my macerators, compresssors, and extractors have an additional four slots to the far right of the normal GUI. Is this related to the new module system, or is it a buildcraft/redpower compatibility thing, or what?

Module system, power expansions, transformers and overclocking. Should be on the wiki, hopefully.

Hmmm, I'm gonna have to get me one of them overclockers. . .
About 8-10 overclockers in one slot will make a Macertor process ores near instantly.

11-12 OC should be the most optimal amount, the rest its just a waste.
