The teleporter COULD be a small rift generator. Folding 2 points of space together then punching a hole between them right under steve. He then falls out the bottom and flips around just as the rift closes.

Nah, I think, as it needs tons of energy, but has no direct "sensible" connection to the other teleporter, it uses wormholes.
