So, I've been privileged with a Pre-release video of the Aether. My Question to you, barring incompatibilities (if any), what're your plans for a mega base in the Aether?

Probably not even going to bother given how it's incompatible with any MC Forge mods. I did play it for a while in 1.7.3 before I discovered IC2 or BC or RP but even then it didn't last long before I got bored of it.
I'd consider it if it weren't (purposefully) incompatible with basically all of the other major mods (as they're forge based)

    Windpower:
The problem with wind-power is that by its very nature you need LONG DISTANCE power transfers. You need to move your EU's through a very long cable which means a lot of power loss. If this problem were solved, Windpower would be a great choice.

Problem 1: We need a way to convert LV to EV and back again cheaply. The current setup requires a lot of transformers to convert between the two as well a lot of highly lossy refined iron cable. Your best bet is the not even insulate it because that is a metric tun of rubber required to fully insulate it. You are also going to need a heck of a lot of this cable.

Possible solution: Make a transformer between LV and EV. Try bronze cables (and fix the bronze formula to yeild 4 dust. How does 4 dusts turn into 2 dusts? If you wanted to somewhat accurate on how bronze was really made it would be 8 copper to 1 tin (actually its should be 19:1 ratio but you can't do that in minecraft)). The EV transfer cost should be cheaper, if we are trying to be realistic. After all in the real world we do use EV to transfer power precisely because it is far more efficient.

Then you really haven't done the math then. Transferring power via EV from the top of the world to the "ground level" is something on the order of 95% (or higher) efficient. I wouldn't call that "highly lossy" as that's what that cable was intended for. I also wouldn't call ~40-50 pieces "a lot" and that isn't really a "metric ton" of rubber. In my IC2 game i've usually got that much sitting around waiting to be used. I've also used *far* more than ~40-50 pieces of glass fibre cable for just LV and MV stuff and that's *far* more expensive than EV cable.
also: *two* transformers is "a lot"? HV transformers are pretty cheap compared to the lots of "repeaters" method and you only need two. one to send the EV and another to receive it.

But I download a folder, do I want to compress the folder and copy and paste it into the industrial craft.jar? or just place the whole folder in the mods folder, that didn't work though?

Did you even read? download the .zip file*, move .zip file into the mods folder. that's it... your done.

*seriously, it's *not* a folder, it's a zip file, turn on file extensions in windows. utterly *stupid* decision microsoft made there.

Originally you could use wind power. That was back when you just had one kind of cable, copper. You could easily make a extreme voltage converter and those lesser MFEs. You still had to build a very tall tower and place your generators up top and transferring the power down a LONG WAY using EV. Then you got it at the bottom and lost maybe 200 EU, but who cares? Then you easily convert it back to normal voltages.

Then they screwed it all up in IC2. Now you have all these cable types and the cost in materials just to convert from LV to EV and back again is absolutely nuts. Did anyone think about that? Until they remedy that, Wind power is completely useless as a real source of power.

What's so bad about the new system? Did you forget how utterly horrible the old system was? You had to do a bunch of complicated splits or you'd be wasting power left and right due to the half goes each split thing. I *love* the new system, it's not like stepping things up to EV is all that hard. As to wind: it's effectively unchanged since IC1. Build wind generators on top of the world connected to a MFE and step it up to HV then EV for transmission to the ground then back to HV to feed a MFSU

Nuclear isn't all that frightening/dangerous if you use a simple mark 1 setup. Essentially risk free.

Yup! I've had a 35EU/t (now 70) 2 chamber reactor running with zero problems for quite a while now. The only problem i've had is what to do with the depleted uranium. (don't have a breeder, not sure if I want to go through the hassle)
It's a bit annoying making everything for the initial setup but after that you only have to feed it more fuel.

Hmm love the new flying miner but what happens if you lose track of it? does it have an auto return to home system when it gets low on power and needs a new lapotron crystal?. if not that would be a nice addition to it have it come back to where it started and wait for you to place a new power supply in it then go back to where it left off and keep going. :D right now im in a very dense forest and i run the risk of losing it in the trees lol.

there's a solution to that one: burn the forest down! :)
granted that's harder than it used to be now. Anyone like the "old" fire system better? The one that would burn an entire forest down and leave lovely burning logs behind as light sources?
Hell, i'd be happy if fire would just burn a forest down instead of semi-stupidly self extinguishing.

That is a pretty good idea, however, this would not be my reccomendation as even with gold or tele pipes, it still wouldn't be nearly as efficient as Glass fiber or other cables, which send power instataniously, unless using a transformer to convert from low to higher voltage.

you seem to not get the point. Projects such as this and my "silly ways of moving power about" thread are more about lossless but ultimately impractical ways of moving power about.
I could still see this being used for some far flung area with a couple teleport pipes and chunk loading blocks though.
"wouldn't be as efficient" is just a matter of distance. anything beyond 200+ blocks would be hideously expensive to send power the traditional way.

Hang on. No moon makes me kinda sad(the idea of building a moon base complete with a giant frikkin laser to blow up my foes seemed fun), but I have a hunch I know what you're planning to do to make the rockets which could reach the moon still useful...
Orbital Ion Cannons! I love it! Always wanted to build one, the idea of blowing up foes with a few button presses with a pretty death beam from the sky has always made me happy.

Yeah, I was sorta looking forward to the moon as well.

Rapidfire dispensers (thanks to RP gates) aren't bad either, especially when they open your scrap boxes :3
I wish RP computing would exist already, I'd so make a fricking counting machine that creates a table from it. I'm so gonna redo this test when we get that, wonder what scrap boxes will give then, if they still exist then...

Edit: also I'll use the deployer nexttime... the dispenser derps about RP current so it only runs half as fast since I have to toggle gate it.

actually what I found works well (if you have the additional pipes mod or BC 3.x) is a redstone pipe hooked to 3 max length repeaters. Must be an activated gold pipe but it's enough of a delay to fire the dispenser off when the scrap box gets there.

Along with a part of his fanbase and his credibility. :whistling:

yeah, he throws a big temper tantrum, partially over eloraam modifying base classes for forge hooks.
What does he do? turn around and modify base classes *himself* whenever he sees fit. I don't really play BTW anymore but I keep up to date on the changes, just because. Two of the new features he introduced modify the base classes.
I'm sure he doesn't see a problem with this either. Seems like the very definition of hypocrite to me.

One thing is for certain... the number of people who build a Quantum Chest will already dramatically increase. It's always been my last piece, and I notice from Direwolf20's videos that I am not the onyl one who likes the QBoots/QLegs/QHelm/Batpack (or now Lappack) combo.

So users now have to weigh the constant benefits of a Quantum Helm and Boots that can basically be made for the same iridium cost as the Chest, which they may only wear some of the time.

Heh, I think I have yet to build a quantum chest piece. Just isn't worth it, even when i'm out exploring. Helmet/Legs/Boots? sure, those are all rather useful, though I think i'll end up building the helmet last now given I really only use it for underwater work.

I got 4GB and it seems to run fine atm. Are there any noticable diferences with 8GB?

For average everyday tasks? not really (note: this includes games and such)
For crazies like me that run Virtual Machines with 1-2gig assigned to them once in a while? yeah, there was a difference. (also have 8Gig here)
Note that you do need to run a 64-bit OS to gain the benefit of more than 4Gig of ram.

I have a very fast CPU (which is also a quadcore)... most lag generated from MC is mostly related to RAM shuffling than anything else. I have a mere 2GB of RAM... more often than not MC will consume 1.5, forcing everything else into half a gig. So, once tons of items show up, it's not so much processing them that causes lag as much as it is finding room for them in RAM. :S
    <snip>

Yikes. Do you have any spendable money at all? RAM is *cheap* like stupid cheap. a "fast quad core" kinda gets held back a lot if the system's starved for memory all the time.

Bleh, just got back from work and can barely keep my eyes open. Don't think I'll be able to resolve the last bug tonight. (I could theoretically upload the current version, but I don't think you'd be too happy with an autominer that randomly drops its entire inventory) Saturday is my next guess - sorry about all these delays, guys. 'Tis the life of a graduate student.

    "graduate student" aka: Slave labor?
seriously though, take your time, i'm quite happy with just the fusion reactor so far.

I personally Like Pipes WAY better than RP's tubes. Especially with BC's recent update.

(although, the process of getting the gates and stuff is way too complex and annoying in my opinion.)

"way too complex"? Didn't seem that bad. Granted I have't messed with v3 (going to wait until it's out of alpha) and just watched the videos but it looks like something one could automate.
Time is the only issue I have with it. takes a while to do one gate.
