Laser beams in mining mode break only half blocks of the 6 wich is written in the wiki. So instead of breaking 6 smoothstones it breaks only 3 if you stand next to the block. If you stand 1 block away, the beam will break only 2 smoothstones and the beam doesnt travel as far as written in the wiki (64 blocks).
Bug 1.15 Mining laser

I belive they also take into account explosion resitsnace, or possibly mining time with drill, so tougher materials will slow down or stop the beam sooner. Also, the wiki is not finished yet, so the information may not be valid.
-
I think it is taken into account
Mining Block penetration distance: 6 (smoothstone), 24 (dirt), probably just needs a fix. -
The calculation changed in 1.15.
-
So the laser will remove less blocks in mining/other mode/s than stated in the wiki?
-
I also noticed it doesn't travel as far through 'empty' air.
-
Mining laser is useless now, for combat or mining. Has a travel distance of about 10 blocks and mining acts like low-focus. Is a fix in the works?
-
laser is no longer win button.
64 is air range - when nothins obstruct beam.
also laser not able to break new 1.8 blocks (like web) and bricks (clay based)
-
laser = useless end of story

I agree. It really needs redesigned. It is not useful for anything at all. You cannot use it for mining effectively, it uses far too much power for any of the reasonably effective modes, the scatter mode just makes a huge mess and does not help, low focus could be nice to take out ores quickly, except it doesnt work for that. It is not a ranged weapon, since it wreaks the terrain, holy everything...

Negative. "Air range" is 10-20 blocks.
