Is cobblegen really most lag-effective scrap generator? I was thinking about snowballs, but they are, sadly, banned. But may be it is possible to improve upon it, by making cobble slabs, etc?

Ok, scrap=not ok, but one wood (after scaffoldisation) can be burned for 10k eu at 19eu/t rate. And trees can be auto-farmed at very low cost. So, potentially it can be more effective than even wind.
Even without aut-crafting, one wood can be burned for 4k eu, which is not bad either.

It probably has not as good scalability as wood, though, as it takes much more place, but materials required is much more cheaper per eu/t.

Not bad, actually. And has optional space for two or three (if you move it one cell lower) coolant cells, allowing to connect reactor with redwire and/or pipes for automatic uranium reloading.

This setup can be used as mobile power source for miners, teleporters, etc.

Scrap is burned for 870 eu and cost 360 eu to produce. So, with cobblegen (or snowballgen), it can run at surplus.
Another alternative could be burning autofarmed wood/reed/cacti.

Has anyone tried it? Is it effective, compared to solars, for example?

I mostly played ssp, and my progression was coal-geo-nuclear. You don't need to build 6-chamber to start producing nuclear energy, 0-chamber is more than enough for all early-game needs.
And 0-chamber is very cheap for it's power - check planner.

Green gens are good for SMP, if you can get them loaded for long enough time, while you are away, and for investing all that iron you get from uu. Of them, wind is most effective.

Gheotermal are valid for early game, before you get your first nuclear, and for Nether.

Nuclear are overall best, while you have uranium.

So, right way i think is coal (or scaffolds) - geo - nuclear - bigger and badder nuclear (casucs and breeders) - make tons of uu - make tons of wind - build as much wind as your pc or server can manage - have constant huge income of eu.

Yea, geothermals seem to be king. A battery of nine geothermals, around three golden waterproof pipes, produces 180 EU/tic.

If you don't mind running around with lots of buckets - yes, gheoterms are good. But if you want to use pipes - you should compare gheotherms not with vanilla ic2, but with casucs. And casuc is ~2000 eu/t.
And don't cheat in you math by comparing generator count to copper count. 9 generators is 72 iron, which is a lot.

You can convert uranium to ungodly amount of energy and stuff. so, any mod that allows crafting uranium for anything but ungodly amount of stuff, will be broken if used with IC.

    Including Thaumcraft, with it's duplicator.

Also, I want to add that Thaumcraft has a lot of things that are hard, or not possible to do with other mods.

Zephyrus sword - fast HORIZONTAL movement in air, something that is IMPOSSIBLE with jetpacks.

Wand of Equal trade - instant digging up of veins. Not 100% perfect, but it digs clay, glowstone and trees amazingly good. Can be also used for changing your house material and such.

Occult enchanter and repairer - awesome.

Wand of lightning - puts laser to shame, because does not require much aiming and does not damage scenery.

Boots of striding etc - awesome mobility, something that quantoom boots should be, but aren't.

Seals - easy teleport, farming, mob grinding, etc.

And lot of it is accessible even before research is started.

In term of power level, it leaves IC behind by far. Only two thing from IC I am missing are long range laser mode and jetpack.
