I guess it has been suggested and denied many times.

It's a "press X to win" generator.
-
It's like the Minecraftia's worlds greatest griefing tool!
-
Its the most stupid piece of equipment ever though.
-
1. make an addon
2. prove us all wrong
3. ???
4. profit -
ok ive calmed down a bit, but how is it stupid? and what do you mean "press x to win"?

Lightning rod suggestions have been turned down time and time again because they are too overpowered in the mere fact that they are set and forget, and do not have any limitations unlike the other generators here.
Solars - Only work during the day
Geo Gens - Have to have a constant supply of lava (lava is hard to find)
Nuclear - Have to babysit constantly
Generators - Need coal/burnable stuff
Wind Mills - Need to be up high to produce any sort of reliable EU, plus their chance to break randomly
Water Mills - Need to be fed water via buckets/cellsAlso, the "Press X to win" is essentially saying what I said above, "Set and forget"

How does only working during a thunderstorm count as not having a limitation? wtf? Solar panels work every single day, and provide clean and constant power. No, the real problem with lightning rods is that to be even relatively balanced, it would have to generate a huge amount of power for a lightning strike, and they don't scale well (for obvious reasons). The lightning rod is denied because it isn't useful, not because it isn't a cool idea.
-
The lightning rod suggestion its ACTUALLY rejected because:
1. Lightning Storms happens once a year.
2. Lightning Strikes have a random nature, they attack random spots at random times.
3. Even if the Lightning rod where to "Attract" the Lightning strikes, its range would not be major than 5 block per side. (Or something along those lines, at best they would cover the entire chunk they are placed in)Tell me, how many fudging lightning strikes have you seen in your entire minecraft experience? Specially lightning strikes happening nearby.
In the end, Lightning rod its a stupid idea.

Herp derp. And of course, in my haste, I overlook the obvious. Thanks for pointing that out.

so basically they are either overpowered or totally useless hence why we don't use anything like them in real life as a common power source.

4. profitEven if someone made a lightning rod addon that somehow actually worked and was neither completely useless nor overpowered (good luck), doesn't mean that the chances of seeing lightning rods in IC2 base mod would go up at all.
But, just because they're useless and pointless, doesn't mean that every time someone makes a bad suggestion completely unrelated to lightning rods, it should be shot down with "oh, and don't suggest lightning rods either." That happens rather a lot and is pretty foolish.
-
thats because its usually the persons first post and they just made repeat suggestion so if they are not smart enough to run a search for their idea its only a matter of time before the think of lightning rods
-
just implement damn lighting rod generator that will BURN every machine due 100000000 EU production and everyone will be happy. (at least before anyone will notice this, since chance for lighting to strike rod extremely slim this may take weaks or more)
-

It's already a planned Powersource for some Energycompanys, and the Blueprints for a Lightningrod are already there, but it costs way too much, to build such a Lightningrod IRL just for a few hundredthousand € per Lightningstrike that hits it. So its actually only for Science.

Except that this wastes a block ID to do something completely asinine.

No waste of BlockID because there are only 6 Generators but 16 Diffrent are possible (Supercodevalue), but its definetly a waste of time, like me writing this Post.
-
Meta Block Ids.
if al wanted to he could code 10k+ different kinds of generators and it would only use 1 Block Id in the process. Not that he will bother with something so useless like that.

16 actually
